Nonprofit Minor Internship Award

      Because of a pledge made by Kristen Replogle, the Institute for Nonprofits is able to provide $1,000 internship awards to a selected student or students who are completing an unpaid NPS 490 internship as part of their requirements to receive their Nonprofit Studies Minor. We would like to take a moment to honor the two award recipients from the past year; Katherine Baker and Meredith Johnson.

     Katherine Baker is a senior from Belmont, North Carolina. She is majoring in Business Administration. She has volunteered with several different organizations including Habitat for Humanity, the Pretty in Pink Foundation, the Holy Comforter Lutheran Church, and the Tammy Lynn Center. Katherine completed her internship in the summer of 2015 at Stop Hunger Now in Raleigh, North Carolina. Katherine is grateful for this award as it helped enable her to take an unpaid internship and still be able to pay her living expenses. It helped her to be the most engaged that she could possibly be with her internship. She has especially enjoyed working with the organization’s Director of Finance and Chief Financial Officer. Katherine has had many great experiences with the minor, but her biggest takeaway was that it is important to engage the younger generation in the nonprofit sector because they bring both passion and new experiences to the table.

     Meredith Johnson is a senior from Winston-Salem, North Carolina. She is a Marketing and Entrepreneurship major and has done her internship this past spring. Meredith is a member of University Scholars, Order of Omega, and Alpha Delta Pi Sorority where she has served as Finance Vice President, Fundraising Chair, Risk Management Leader, and House Corporation Board Finance Representative. In addition, she is also a member of the National Society of Collegiate Scholars, and the Student Alumni Association. She even studied abroad in Seville, Spain. In addition, she has volunteered with Habitat for Humanity and Sister2Sister International Outreach Ministry. Meredith interned at a start-up in Raleigh, North Carolina called A Place at the Table. She has loved her experience there and has really enjoyed the relationships she has built with everyone, especially with the owner Maggie Kane. Meredith has truly enjoyed how extensive and hands on the minor has been, and has liked interacting with a group of people working towards a common purpose that is greater than the bottom line. Maggie Kane, Meredith’s internship supervisor has thoroughly enjoyed working with Meredith as well. Maggie stated, “Meredith was an exceptional intern. She was devoted to A Place at the Table, passionate for the mission, and a true rock star. She was and is not only brilliant and creative, but hilarious and energetic as well. Meredith was a gem of an intern and now is a gem of a friend to me. We are grateful for her hard work and love for A Place at the Table. We could not have done it without her”!
